windream – the History of a Successful IT-Enterprise

1985: Founded in Dortmund, Germany


Since 25 years we have been developing IT-supported software systems for efficient information management. Founded 1985 in Dortmund, Germany, as “A.I.S. Angewandte Informations-Systeme GmbH“, we have since then become one of the leading and most successful suppliers of enterprise content management solutions. Founded as a former specialist in the sector of archiving and document management, we have grown to a renowned ECM system supplier who provides a complete product range not only in Germany, but also on international level.

1999: Patents and products


In 1999, we have already introduced the first version of our windream ECM-system. After applying for a patent, the technological basis of the product, the so called Virtual Filesystem Technology (VFS), was patented in the same year by the ”Deutsches Patent- und Markenamt”. Since 2003, the patent is also valid worldwide. In autumn 1999, also the first network-enabled windream version 2.0 was presented on the DMS EXPO fair in Essen, Germany. Since then, the windream ECM-system has continuously been further developed and with great success. After the introduction of the 3.0 version at the CeBIT 2001, windream became a winner of the North Rhine-Westphalia Future Competition.

2001: Product and company name united


In December 2001, the company decided to unite the product name and the company name – the former A.I.S. became windream GmbH. The range of functions of the windream ECM-system was again extended substantially by the release of the 4.0 version in summer 2007. A new rights concept, the integration of a hierarchic storage management application and the operation in distributed server environments were the milestones of the windream development in those years. The currently available windream version is 6.0.

windream today


Currently, windream GmbH employs 75 people – with increasing tendency. More than 250 worldwide partners support us in sales, as cooperation partners or as solution providers. Until now, our partners have developed more than 100 software solutions all around windream – from different branch-specific applications up to modern software tools with which typical office jobs can completely be automised. A whole variety of integrations into third party products complete the portfolio. These are e.g. connections to ERP and accounting systems and integrations into knowledge management, groupware or imaging/ data capturing solutions as well. And windream still grows: Only in the first half of the 2009 business year, the company has achieved a turnover plus of more than 20 percent. Additionally, windream achieved an outstanding test result after having participated in the Enterprise Content Management competition and studies of the independent Business Application Research Center situated in Würzburg, Germany.

windream GmbH supports enterprises which use the windream ECM-system by a competent service hotline with short reaction times. Further on, we also offer training sessions for users who want to learn more about the windream system and about the administrative system functions. These training sessions address windream users and administrators as well.

Many nationally and internationally renowned enterprises count amongst our customers, like e.g. Babcock Noell, the DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung (German Air Traffic Control), the German engine manufacturer Deutz AG, Swisscom, the printing machines manufacturer Koenig & Bauer AG and BKK Essanelle.
