Important note concerning the licensing of core licenses for the Microsoft SQL Server

Licenses Required for All Phyiscal Cores of a Server

Due to recent events, we would like to alert our customers and partners of the fact that the following Microsoft license conditions must be observed for the licensing of core licenses for the Microsoft SQL Server.

As specified in the Microsoft licensing guidelines, all physical cores of the MS SQL Server 2012 and of the MS SQL Server 2014 must be licensed separately. Licensing only those physical cores that are actually used by the MS SQL Server is not sufficient.

Therefore, a server with 2 x 6 cores and a processor requires 12 core licenses for the MS SQL Server. Furthermore, at least 4 core licenses per processor must be acquired. This means that a total of 8 core licenses must be purchased for a Server with 2 processors and 2 cores each.

In virtual environments, all virtual cores used by the SQL Server must be licensed. However, hyperthreadings are not considered as additional cores to be licensed.
